The Rabbinical Jews were going from city to
city, telling the Gentiles, that they could not be saved, UNLESS they FIRST be
circumcised and follow the Law.
This has been misinterpreted I think, to the
point where people teach that ALL a Gentile has to do is:
abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality.
But if we read this in context,
Act 15:21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
Paul and the other Apostles only taught from Tanankh, seeing how there was NO "New Testament" to teach from, at the time.
We know also, from the context, that Paul followed the Law, and we also know that he told his listeners to emulate the way he lived. 1Co 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
Act 21:21 And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.
Act 21:22 What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come.
Act 21:23 Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men which have a vow on them;
Act 21:24 Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.
As to circumcision, Paul never taught against circumcision, for he himself circumcised Timothy, so that the Jews couldn't point out that Timothy was circumcised by them.
Act 16:3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek
What Paul taught on circumcision, was that it was not required as a prerequisite to salvation.
To even become a follower of The Way, or be a disciple, first the Jew or Gentile had to "confess" Yeshua as their master and king.
If we look that up, in the context of it's usage however, to confess is to make a covenant.
The relevant covenant is the 10 Commandments.
*[[Deu 4:13]] KJV* And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
So, what else were they learning every Sabbath, with Moses being read to them? The answer is the rest of the instructions on how to live obedient lives in YHVH.
The writer of Hebrews says this too
*[[Heb 6:1-3]] KJV* Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit.
Paul often had to deal with the Gentiles though, that were going back into their pagan ways, and not moving forward into the meat of the teachings.
